Fruit Kiosk
Academie Lafayette, with the help of the Menorah Legacy Foundation, launched a Fruit Kiosk during the 2007-08 school year. Children enjoyed fresh fruit from the cart at least twice a week. They tried kiwis, mangoes, pineapple and even made guacamole on Cinco de Mayo. Thanks to the Academie Lafayette Parents Association, we are able to provide fresh fruit for the current school year as well. Classroom Gardens Students planted gardens for the first time last spring. They grew tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and other seasonal vegetables. They also planted fruit trees - pear, apple and cherry for future students to enjoy. Walking School Bus The Walking School Bus is a group of students who walk to school together with adult supervision. Benefits include: improved heatlh and fitness, better behavior and focus in class, reduced traffic congestion and air pollution, and social opportunities for kids and parents. Kindergarten Farm to Food Initiative In partnership with KC Healthy Kids and the Missouri Extension Office, Académie Lafayette is participating in this program designed to link our Kindergarten students and their parents to local food growers. The program includes nutrition lessons, fruit and vegetable snacks, seasonal visits to local farms and in-school "Market Days" for children to being local produce home to their families. The goals are to increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables among kindergarten students and their families and to develop skills to make food choics that improve health and reduce the risk of overweight and obesity.
