MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Number and Operations

  1. Student will be able to demonstrate understanding numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers & number systems.    
  2. Student will be able to understand meanings of operations and how they relate to one another    
  3. Student will be able to compute fluently and make reasonable estimates    

Algebraic Relationships

  1. Student will be able to demonstrate understanding patterns, relations and functions
  2. Student will be able to represent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using algebraic symbols    
  3. Student will be able to use mathematical models to represent and understand quantitative relationships        

Geometric and Spatial Relationships

  1. Student will be able to analyze characteristics and properties of two and three dimensional geometric shapes and develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships     
  2. Student will be able to specify locations and describe spatial relationships using coordinate geometry and other representational systems    
  3. Student will be able to apply transformations and use symmetry to analyze mathematical situations
  4. Student will be able to use visualization, spatial reasoning and geometric modeling to solve problems

Measurement

  1. Student will be able to understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems and processes of measurement     
  2. Student will be able to apply appropriate techniques, tools and formulas to determine measurements.    

Data and Probability

  1. Student will be able to formulate questions that can be addressed with data and collect, organize and display relevant data to answer them.    

COMMUNICATION ARTS - READING CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
 
Develop and apply skills and strategies to the reading process

Print Concepts - Demonstrate concepts of print:   

  1. upper- and lower-case letters
  2. first and last letters in words
  3. directionality in letter and word order
  4. punctuation has meaning      

Phonemic Awareness - Demonstrate ability to use phonemes to construct words:

  1. produce rhyming words
  2. separate and say sounds in words
  3. blend sounds to form words
  4. replace beginning and ending sounds to form new words

Phonics - Develop and apply decoding strategies to "problem-solve" unknown words when reading grade level instructional text  

Fluency - Read grade-level instructional text by developing automaticity of an increasing core of high-frequency words with appropriate  phrasing and expression

Vocabulary - Develop vocabulary by reading, listening to, and discussing unknown words in stories using 

  1. root words 
  2. word chunks
  3. context clues                                             

Pre-Reading - Develop and apply, with assistance, pre-reading strategies to aid comprehension

Apply a writing process in composing text

Writing Concepts - Follow a writing process to brainstorm and record ideas in written form

  1. generate a draft in written form on student-selected topic
  2. reread writing
  3. revise writing to clarify meaning and enhance descriptions (such as, describing words, relevant details)
  4. edit for conventions (W2E) with assistance
  5. publish writing with assistance 

Compose well-developed text 

Audience & Purpose - Recognize audience and purpose with assistance

Ideas & Contents - Compose text using pictures and words with ideas that relate to topic, with assistance

Organization & Sentence Structure - Compose text

  1. with a simple opening and simple closing
  2. with complete sentences or thoughts 

Word Choice - Compose text using some words that are specific, accurate, and related to the topic , with assistance.

Conventions in written text

  1. print all letters legibly, using correct pathway of movement, and spacing between letters and words
  2. capitalize names of people and beginning words of sentences
  3. use a period at end of sentence and a comma in the greeting and closing of a letter with assistance
  4. use naming words (nouns) and action words (verbs) correctly
  5. spell correctly high frequency  words and words with simple patterns
  6. use phonetic spelling, classroom resources to verify correct spelling, and spelling strategies 

Write effectively in various forms and types of writing

  1. use narrative, descriptive, expository, and/or persuasive features
